Why Do Dentists Recommend Oral Irrigators?

3 February 2023

We already know that the overall health of the body is primarily influenced by dental health. Therefore, it is important to take a responsible attitude when it comes to our smile and the correct care of our teeth. Why do dentists recommend oral irrigators? Because this is a device that offers professional dental care at home.

Correct oral hygiene with the help of an oral irrigator: why doctors recommend it?
A multitude of bacteria live in the oral cavity, most of which are good bacteria that protect our oral health. However, there are also bacteria that accumulate as bacterial plaque and convert leftover food in the mouth into acids, which over time can lead to tooth damage. The bacteria responsible for this tend to multiply at night, when a larger amount of saliva is secreted, and our activity is on pause.
Dentists recommend the oral irrigator because in the absence of a complete daily routine, the bacteria in the oral cavity can promote the occurrence of severe dental caries and gum diseases (gingivitis – inflammation and bleeding of the gums during brushing).
For a healthy smile, doctors recommend practicing regular oral hygiene by brushing your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes, and using an oral irrigator. An oral irrigation session should last a minimum of 1-2 minutes, twice a day – in the morning and evening. This way, you not only ensure clean teeth but also protect your gums and maintain fresh breath.

Correct dental care for people who wear braces
Dental hygiene is very important for everyone, especially for people who wear fixed braces. Why? Because in this case, there are more places where food residues can remain. Therefore, you need to pay special attention to oral hygiene because it is not the dental brace that causes tooth decay, but the food residues that cause dental infections.
Up to 50% of people who wear braces suffer from tissue inflammation. The main cause is unsatisfactory oral hygiene.
Different dental hygiene devices, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and especially the oral irrigator, come to our aid. Regular use of the oral irrigator prevents many dental conditions, including: tooth demineralization, dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal disease, gingival recession.
For people who wear brackets or other types of orthodontic appliances, the oral irrigator is a must-have as it greatly simplifies hygiene, and is much more efficient. There are two types of oral irrigators – stationary and portable (see here for more models).

Oral health care during pregnancy. The dentist’s advice
For proper oral hygiene during pregnancy, the doctor recommends brushing twice a day – in the morning and evening. Last but not least, the dentist recommends the oral irrigator for pregnant women. We explain why below.
Pregnancy is a real challenge for a woman’s body and requires more thorough dental care. During pregnancy, the vast majority of women have toxemia. For this reason, the vomiting reflex is accentuated. Using an oral irrigator during pregnancy is very beneficial because it offers you the possibility to always have fresh breath. You will feel relieved and keep your teeth healthy.

Can children use an oral irrigator?
The best method of preventing children’s dental infections is the oral irrigator. The dentist recommends the use of the device to children from 2 years old, guided by parents. The oral irrigator is a huge saving, as it can be used by the whole family.
Prophylaxis is the key to ensuring good long-term oral health for the entire family!
